EDM Studio delivered a centre-piece interactive for Agrium Inc's revamped educational outreach exhibit, Seed Survivor. Cooperative rather than competitive, this four-player agricultural interactive teaches children that nutrients must be delivered at the right time, in the right amount, and at the right place.

Using an innovative physical interface, children use modified gardening implements to control nutrient dispensers in a virtual world. The technology is called augmented-reality, and it relies on sophisticated computer vision techniques to capture the location in 3-dimensional space of specially-patterned marker tiles. The physical nature of the interface is a definite draw for the often fickle attention of today's tech-savvy kids. Additionally, manipulating actual objects to control a computer simulation makes the virtual world that much more "real".

We appreciated the time Darran and Andrew put into researching the technology required to build this game - and the science behind what we wanted to communicate. They diligently came to watch children playing the game at the first few events. As such, they could make changes quickly and view the results immediately. Overall, we were impressed by EDM's commitment to the task and believe that by working with them we are able to offer a truly unique experience in our education program.
